Tasks to complete over the course of Grade 11
Explore learning opportunities in class and outside of class. You’ll be completing university applications in the autumn of Grade 12, which means that Grade 11 results will be the last grades on your transcript (received by all US universities and some international universities as well) and will determine your GPA and your first round of predicted grades (used by UK, Canadian, Dutch universities and many others).
Be involved in meaningful activities and seek out leadership positions.
Take the PSAT in October if you are applying to US universities.
Explore your university options. Think about what you are looking for (courses/majors, location, academic reputation, size, etc.) and learn as much as you can about the universities that you are considering. Remember that educational systems differ from country to country.
Consider registering for the ACT and/or SAT. We encourage students regardless of where they plan to attend university to consider taking one of these exams in the spring of Grade 11 as it can be a useful addition to an application (especially if you narrowly miss your offer in the UK) .
Make university visits. Use UK Open Days. Talk to university representatives when they visit.
Utilize your Unifrog account to search for universities, develop an understanding of your skills using the Quizzes section, explore subjects and do MOOCS.
Meet with your University Counsellor regularly to discuss your university plans.
Begin to narrow your list of university options. Research and visit universities over the summer and have your list narrowed down to no more than ten options.
Begin to think about teachers who you could ask for letters of recommendation. Ask yourself whether or not they know your work, personality and other characteristics well enough to write you a compelling letter. UK applications will have teachers comments collated in a counsellor letter or reference.
Complete the Junior Project before the summer term - present this to your university counsellor
Finalise your ECA and Character Traits Trackers - these will be shared with your teachers who will be your recommenders.
